A Grief Observed

Man, when he does not grieve, hardly exists. ~Antonio Porchia, Voces, 1943, translated from Spanish by W.S. Merwin
There's a quote worth thinking about. It's especially relevant to me at the moment as my family are experiencing tremendous grief due to the death of my cousin. How do you comfort someone in those painful throes of suffering? What words will bring some comfort to those who feel as if they've had their very heart ripped out of their chest?
All I know for sure is this...The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. -- Psalm 34:18

  1. (Leeanne again on alans blog) sorry to har abour you cousin. My 2 cousins committed suicide last year and my whole family was torn apart, but like you said God is close to those who are brokenhearted. I dont know how people get through life's circumstances without God or without knowing that God is 'close to the brokenhearted. God saved me when i was crushed in spirit.

    xx

  2. Thanks Leeanne and I'm sorry to hear about your loss too. I so agree - how could we ever process the pain without God!

  3. hey Nic, im really sorry to hear about your loss. i know what ya mean about the quote as we need to grieve even though its so tough. when i was younger i had some deaths in me family, as im tough i never grieve which means it worse. its hard to know what to say to people. i know you have such a big heart for God and other people have seen that. God is always there for people in need even though they sometimes dont realise it, but he is standing by for the heartbroken.

We are all “apollumi”, or “lost and perished” as the lost sheep was. We are separated and alienated from God. But the lost sheep did not stay that way. And neither does anyone else. The Good Shepherd does not stop looking until He has found the last one.

A careful read of the Parable of the Lost Sheep makes it very plain that for Jesus, ninety nine is NOT ENOUGH...
